75 Squadron's Short Stirling III (#BK809) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven and laden with fuel and bombs, took off from RAF Mepal at night for an air operation over Boulogne, France. However, during the takeoff a crosswind caused BK809 to swing violently, colliding with a petrol bowser/tanker before crashing into houses bordering the airfield.
The three members of the crew who lost their lives as the result of this accident were-
RAFVR Flying Officer Norman Hathway GALE,
RNZAF Flying Officer Ian Robert MENZIES and
RAFVR Sergeant Albert Leslie MELLOR, who died from the injuries he's sustained in the crash.
Two civilians perished in this incident as well as RNZAF Flight Sergeant Peter Gerald DOBSON Mid, who lost his life by exploding bombs and falling debris when he rushed to assist the crew and the occupants of the house, and
WAAF Section Officer Joan Marjorie EASTON, who was also attempting to assist.

The remains of Joan were buried with those of her brother, Eric John Easton who had died in 1941 whilst on active service. Their grandmother, Marjorie Easton (Memorial 257972996) is also buried in the same grave.
