Nellie was born on 13.7.1908, the daughter of Andrew Vincent Cavanagh and Edith Cavanagh nee Gash, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire.

Nellie married Stanley Gregory in 1939 Salford.

Service Number: 1940. Country of Service United Kingdom.

On 23rd November 1940, German airplanes attacked the South Coast. 24 Wrens had gathered for dinner in the dining room of Mansfield Hostel, Lee on Solent (HMS Daedalus) when an anti-aircraft shell hit the dining room directly and exploded killing 10 WRENS.

Wren Cook Nora Reynolds (23) and
Wren Dorothy Wardell (22).

Eight of the Wrens were laid to rest in Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery. A plaque remains today on the site of Mansfield Hostel, (now Glen Heathers, a Care home) donated by the Gosport Aviation Society in 1996.

Nellie was one of the victims and her remains were recovered and buried at Clayhall Naval Cemetery.
