MEDAL OF HONOR POSTHUMOUSLY

Off. Hanley stopped a vehicle in the unit block of North Avenue. As he was approaching the driver, the suspect tried to accelerate to get away. Off. Hanley jumped onto the running board of the car in an attempt to keep control of the situation. The driver sped through rush hour traffic attempting to throw Off. Hanley off the running board. Finally he made an abrupt turn at East 20th Street & Hargrove Alley flinging Off. Hanley into the street. Off. Hanley was thrown against the street curb and shortly thereafter died of his injuries. The suspect was arrested several days later and was eventually convicted of murder in the death of Off. Hanley. Off. Hanley had 21 years of service with the police department and was survived by his wife Katherine and his 5 children, Robert, Angela, Thomas M, Carroll M & Albert E. Hanley .
