A Tulsa Police officer has died after battling cancer. Officer Jennifer Mansell died at her home in Collinsville* Monday evening. She served on the Tulsa Police Department for more than 20 years and was a long time member of the honor guard. Last November, two hundred Tulsa Police officers showed their support for Mansell by standing outside her hospital room with signs and flashlights. Officer Mansell went home a few days after the vigil and spent her last few months at home. Tulsa Police officers escorted her body from Collinsville to the funeral home in Owasso Monday night.
Jennifer Diane Mansell, 48, of Talala, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, January 17, 2011. She was born September 14, 1962, in Ada, Oklahoma, to Marilyn and Harrold Mansell. She was reared and educated in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated with the Memorial High School Class of 1980. She continued her education attending Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Jennifer started her career with the Tulsa Police Department in 1985 and served in a variety of assignments. She led the way by being one of the first females selected to join the Mounted Patrol Unit. She was the second female to serve with the Honor Guard serving for over 22 years. She soon became known as one of the hardest working officers in the department. She was selected for many specialty units, such as street crimes, auto theft, directed patrol, investigations, and narcotics. In 1991 she was nominated and subsequently awarded the Oil Capital Chamber of Commerce 1991 Police Officer of the Year. During her career she was awarded a number of commendations and medals for her work. After 25 years of service she retired in May 2010, after serving as the Downtown Safety Liaison. This last assignment truly defined who Jennifer was and what she meant to the department as well as the community. It was while serving in this capacity she was awarded the Rotary Club of Tulsa Above and Beyond Service Award 2008 Police Officer of the Year - the first year the award was presented - for her strong dedication and love for those she served. Jennifer was compassionate not only for the victims she encountered but also for those down on their luck. She worked diligently with the downtown shelters caring for the homeless trying to make their lives better. Jennifer was a sports enthusiast from softball to college football to following her Kansas City Chiefs. She loved the game so much she joined a women's flag football team, coached by her good friend, Mark Greenhaw, winning back to back championships for the City of Tulsa. She loved being on her farm, driving her tractor, loving her dogs, especially Valentine, her cats, and her horses. She loved to fish and you could see her at the pond on a sunny morning if she wasn't at the lake with friends and family. Jennifer's passion for life, along with her kindness and compassion for others will live on in the hearts of people on the street she met, her friends, and most of all, her family. Jennifer fought a nine-year battle with breast cancer which finally weakened her body but never did it take her spirit and courage. She fought a valiant and courageous fight with grace. The great uplifting support of all her friends on the police department and throughout the city gave her strength in the fight for which her family is very grateful.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2011, at Mowery Funeral Service in Owasso. Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2011, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Tulsa.
