Alina Riippa was born to Joel and Marija (Evonen) Riippa in either Winona or Atlantic Mine, Michigan. She was the second-youngest of their ten children and the youngest daughter. She attended school in Winona and later resided in Chassell, Michigan, and Kalispell, Montana, where she died.
Alina married William Barkkari. Together, they had two daughters and a son.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Laura Lee Smith; her parents Joel and Marija Riippa; her brothers James, Yalmer, Andrew, and John Riippa; and her sisters Helmi Pietila, Julia Bloom, Lempi Garfield, and Esther Felix.
Surviving were her daughter, son, and brother Arnold Riippa (who died three days later). She was also survived by six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
