He was born in Virginia to Joseph Sprigg and his wife Jane Duncan McMahon.
According to census information he had at least 5 siblings.
He was the second oldest. As a young man he went out west and came back to Maryland a wealthy man.

He married Maria Lamar Rawlings (spelling varies to Mary and even Myrah). She was the daughter of Moses Rawlings and his wife Rebecca McCulloh. Randolph and Maria had at least 3 children, their son Floyd is my maternal great great grandfather. It appears they only had one son, and two daughters Carrie and Margaret.

he went to California (1849) and returned with a considerable amount of money as a result of mining and married Maria, a daughter of Moses Rawlings. He had been employed for the C&O canal for a number of years as canal supervisor. Besides his wife, he leaves a son who is married and resides on a farm near Rawlings Station; and three daughters, Mrs Absolom Baird of this city; and Misses Margaret and Carrie Sprigg at home. His brothers are: Gen Joseph E Sprigg of the city; Richard of Brooklyn; John of Dayton OH; and one sister, Mrs John A McMahon.
