U.S. Congressman. He completed preparatory studies and held a number of local offices in Allegany County, Maryland. In 1827, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth and Twenty-first Congresses, serving until 1831. He also was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates, (1821, 1823, 1837, 1840, 1844) and served as president of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company, (1841 to 1842). His brother James Cresap Sprigg, was a U.S. Congressman from Kentucky.
