On February 3, 2009, Vivian Mae Dye passed away at the age of 91. A resident of Hawthorne for over 50 years, she was a homemaker and traveler. Throughout her life she loved to roam the country with her husband in their RV visiting family and friends all over the United States. Vivian was born in Sisston, SD in 1917 to Earl and Kitty Nagel. She was one of 9 children and loved growing up on the farm. Her siblings who preceded her in death are: Ethel Larson, Alice Gehlen, Milan Nagel, Nellie Henslen, Bruce Nagel, Howard Nagel, Rolland Nagel, Donna Bargfrede. She graduated Swea City High School where she met her future husband Keith Wallace Dye. She enjoyed acting and modeling in high school. Keith moved out west to Los Angeles in 1938 and wooed Vivian from afar until she married him and moved out west in 1940. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and worked at Western Pipe and Steel before starting a 40-year career in the tile industry. She was survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald K. Dye and Carol R. Dye of Lawndale; four granddaughters, Dawnmarie Zimmerman of Ligonier, PA, Stacie O'Connor of El Segundo, CA, Jaime Dye-Mishler of Carson, CA, Carrie Dye of Lawndale, CA; and 6 great-grandchildren, Quinn O'Connor, Jay Zimmerman, Samuel O'Connor, Evan O'Connor, Cole Zimmerman and Madilyn Sedmak. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith W. Dye. The family would like Vivian to be remembered for her delicious cooking, adept gardening skills and her undaunting care and love for her family. The family will hold a Memorial Service for Vivian and her son Donald at Point Vicente Center in Rancho Palos Verdes on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 5pm. A gathering of family & friends will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 9 to 10am. Burial will follow at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Vivian Dye to the American Diabetes Association 1-800-DIABETES or www.diabetes.org.
