Chicago Police officer Thor Soderberg, 43, an 11-year veteran was shot in the line of duty Wednesday, July 7, 2010.

Officer Soderberg is survived by his wife, Jennifer Louden. They had been married for nearly five years.

His widow issued a statement Thursday night through the police department that encouraged people to help the less fortunate.

"I am terribly devastated," Louden said. "I know many of you want to help. Here is what you can do. If you have the opportunity to do something and change someone's life for the better, do it. Start by taking care of every child. Thor and I knew that each young person needs five important adults and one strong adult to provide a positive influence in their lives.

"In his honor, please use a kind word, a smile – as much as you can give to help someone in need. Every one of us can do a tremendous amount of good to impact a child, even one that isn't ours."

A fund has been set up to honor Soderberg. The Chicago Community Trust announced "The Thor Soderberg Fund - Connecting Youth with Nature." It was set up by Soderberg's late wife. The money will be used to send underprivileged kids to summer camp.
