Negro Leagues Baseball Player. Born in Winchester, Virginia, he started playing organized Negro ball for the Harrisburg Colored Giants in 1906. As an outfielder, he was recognized as one of the fastest players of his day attaining batting averages of .440, .398, .414 and .487 against all levels of competition. From 1906 to 1917, he played for the Harrisburg Colored Giants, Philadelphia Giants, New York Lincoln Giants and Brooklyn Royal Giants. During World War I, he served with the US Army in France, earning 5 battle stars and a Purple Heart. After the war, he continued a successful baseball career, playing for the Lincoln Giants (1919-23). He is credited with 2238 hits, 137 homeruns, a lifetime batting average of over .400 and also hit .319 in four winter seasons in Cuba. He died at age 74 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
