MARION -- Charles C. Abney, 83, died at 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at the Marion Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Abney was born on Feb. 27, 1919, in Marion to Jesse & Vida L. (Lackey) Abney. He married Alice A. Moore on March 7, 1942, in Huntsville, Ala. She survives of Marion.
Charles was a World War II Army veteran serving from 1941-1945 in the North Solomon Islands and the Southern Philippines. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
He retired in 1975 after working thirty years as a postal mail carrier. He then worked twelve years before retiring from the State of Illinois Conservation Department in 1988.
Mr. Abney loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing and tending to his quarter horses. He was a member of the Third Baptist Church of Marion where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Alice A. Abney of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Annette and Ray Harris of Marion and Connie Rae and Bob Hilliard of West Frankfort; five grandchildren, Randy Harris and his wife Colleen, Julie Revelle and her husband David, Chap Hilliard and his wife Lisa, Shanna Fleming and her husband Rob and Lance Hilliard and his wife Cherra; six great-grandchildren, Beth Revelle, Mitchell Fleming, and Chance, Caden, Chase, & Colden Hilliard; one brother and sister-in-law, Hallie E. and Lorene Abney of Marion; and one sister-in-law, Frances Abney of Topeka, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Maurice R. Abney.
Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Dr. Jerry Ford officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 11.
