Helen was the daughter of Edward J.F. and Louise (Hagen) Fetzer. She married Arthur Eugene Abney in 1945 and they were the parents of three sons: Thomas Eugene, William Wayne and Robert Hamilton.

SPRINGFIELD - Helen Fredericka Fetzer Abney, 93, of Springfield died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at St. Joseph's Home.

She was born March 31, 1915, near Pleasant Plains, the daughter of Edward J.F. and Louise (Hagen) Fetzer.

Mrs. Abney is survived by her husband, Arthur "Gene"; two sons, William Wayne (Leslie) Abney of Makanda and Robert Hamilton (Demetra) Abney of Woodstock; three grandsons, Jonathan, Benjamin and Drew Abney; a brother, Edward J.F. (Connie) Fetzer Jr. of Bloomington; niece, Joan Taylor Sanders of Springfield; nephew, E. Ronald (Marcia) Fetzer of Bloomington; and niece, Carole Fetzer (Charles) Bolatto of Marseilles.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elouise (Joseph) Taylor.

She graduated from Springfield High School in 1937 and then graduated from Illinois State Normal University in Normal. She attended two summers at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.

She had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and music supervisor of Sangamon County schools. With the approval of the board of supervisors and the superintendent in Springfield, she carried forward a program of teaching music over the radio.

After she lost her first husband when his ship was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine, she joined the American Red Cross. As World War II was beginning to wind down, she married Arthur "Gene" Abney, a U.S. Navy pilot, in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Nov. 9, 1945.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home.
