James Francis Joseph Carroll, son of Redmond Francis Carroll and his wife Josephine Mary Carroll, formerly Meldon, was born on 28 November 1887, at 23 Northumberland Road, Dublin.
His father was a Barrister-at-Law.

In the 1901 census, the Carroll family lived at 24, Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin.
Redmond Francis Stanislaus Carroll was a 54 year old practicing Barrister-at-Law.
His wife, Josephine Mary Catherine Agnes Carroll was 52 years old.

and of his sister MARIA CARROLL who died 27th April 1872
aged 75 years
