He was wounded in the lower leg in the Battle of Resaca, GA on May 15, 1864 on the third day of fighting. He was taken to Empire House Hospital in Atlanta, and arrived there by May 20. Information in a letter sent to his wife from a volunteer at the hospital, he was doing okay on May 20, and expected to recover. However, by June 5 he was dead. According to the hospital, he was doing fine, and he died unexpectedly - (possibly a wound infection or blood clot).
Buried on May 21,1864.
He has a memorial stone next to his wife Susannah in Spring Hill Cemetery, Springhill, Pike County, Alabama.
