Sgt. Soper of Jackson, Michigan was the fifth of eight kids and a football and basketball player who spent two years at Lumen Christi High School. He later earned a high school equivalency degree. Matthew was the light of his family and a part of a chain that will forever be changed but never broken. He returned from his first tour in February 2005 and took classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College until he was called up again in June 2006. He was on his second tour in Iraq and was due home in August. He went after what he believed in no matter what everybody thought. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Alfred Puhr, Kenneth Soper, and Werner Thuli. He believed in what he did, and he was good at it. He was 26.
