Matthew was the son of David Comley and Paulina "Pliney" Bryant. About 1880 he married Jane "Jannie" Carey and they had four children: Bessie, Lillie, John and James. He was a Bourbon Stockyards employee for forty-five years. Matthew died of myocarditis at a local nursing home at the age of 83.
