William was born in Southern Indiana near New Albany in Floyd County. On 30 Mar 1837 he married Eliza L. Jordan and they had at least eight children: Emeline, Ellen, Irene, Jane, Delores, Sophronia, Theresa and Eugene. He was a well-known steamboat captain who piloted many ships, among them the Joe Davis, Diana, Horner No.1, Horner No. 2, Empire and John Raine. William died of paralysis at the age of 85.

Eastern Cemetery was the site of abuse, scandal, and mismanagement for decades. Almost from the very beginning of its existence, multiple burials took place in the same graves, headstones were removed, remains were misplaced or lost, and graves were paved over. The cemetery had space for approximately 30,000 graves but about 130,000 bodies were buried in it. William's grave is unmarked.
