George was a native of Switzerland who immigrated to the United States about 1883. About that same year he married his wife Mary. According to the 1910 Census they had eight children with three surviving into adulthood: George, Jr., John and Mary. Apparently despondent over his loss of employment, George committed suicide by drowning by jumping into the Portland and Louisville Canal. He was 64 years old.

No headstone has been located for George and, most likely, it never will be. Eastern Cemetery was the site of abuse, scandal, and mismanagement for decades. Almost from the very beginning of its existence, multiple burials took place in the same graves, headstones were removed, remains were misplaced or lost, and graves were paved over. The cemetery had space for approximately 30,000 graves but about 130,000 bodies were buried in it.
