Johann was born in the Hannover region of Prussia. Prior to 1850 he immigrated to the United States and he settled in Louisville, Kentucky. On 11 Jul 1850 he married Katherine Miller and they had five children: Amelia, Rosa, Julia, Harry and Emma. The 1850 Census enumerated him as being a grocer but by the time of the 1870 Census he was employed as a china merchant. John died of phthisis pulmonalis (tuberculosis) at the age of 59.
