Joseph was the son of Michael Exly. On 19 Nov 1908 he married Anna Vogelsang. They never had any children. While a young man Joseph was a farmer. At the time of his death he was a self-employed painting contractor. Joseph died of chronic pulmonary tuberculosis at his home, 321 N. 25th Street, at the age of 72.
