According to her death certificate Johanna was a native of Germany and the daughter of William Meyer. She immigrated to the United States sometime in the 1840's and settled in Saint Louis, Missouri. On 10 Nov 1858 she married Ernst Eschmann and the couple had five children, three of whom are known: Sophia, Otto, and Laura. Ernst died in 1885 and Johanna remained a widow the rest of her life. She died of bronchopneumonia at the age of 81.
