Josephine was the daughter of Franz Ruff and Margaret Buddermeier. On 24 Sep 1872 she married Henry Eschmann in St. Louis, Missouri. The couple had seven children: Emil, Josephine, Wanda, Victor, Lottie, George, and Frederick. For many years the family lived in Louisville. Some time after 1890 they moved to St. Louis where Henry died in 1893. Josephine never remarried and she died of pericarditis at the age of 70.
