James was the son of Matthew Comley and Jane Carey. On 24 Jun 1908 he married Fraces Boes and they had one son, Robert. James enlisted in the US Army and served overseas in World War I. Sometime prior to 1920 he and Frances divorced. By the time of the 1930 Census he had married again (to second wife Grace) and they had two children Jeanette and Phyllis. The Census also lists his occupation as farmer.
