Edward was the fourth of eight children born to John P. Buchheit and Elizabeth Von Bokern. On 21 Mar 1925 he married Sophia Dabney. The couple never had any children. For many years Edward was a machinist and it was in that capacity that he retired from the American Tobacco Company. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
