Charles was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime around 1893. On 14 Sep 1899 he married Frances Pape and they had seven, and possibly eight, children: Arthur, Eunice, Lillian, Ethel, Thelma, Charles, Everett, and Shirley (Charles and Everett may be the same person). Charles was a sheet metal worker and, according to one of his grandchildren, at one time he worked on the construction of the Cincinnati, Ohio, bridges. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis at his home, 929 Mary Street, at the age of 48.
