OBITUARY--MRS. LAURA HOWARD

Laura Shugart was born on February 18, 1857 in Stark County, Illinois, and in her childhood moved with her parents to Salem, in the southeastern part of this state, where she spent most of her early life, coming to Des Moines in May of 1883. She was married to H. S. Howard, at Des Moines, in September of that year.

Mrs. Howard has lived in the vicinity of Des Moines most of the time for 39 years, the last thirteen years of which she has been a resident of Ankeny. She passed away at her home on Wednesday morning, April 2nd, having been preceded in death by her husband about seven years.

Though in poor health for some years, Mrs. Howard was a person of wide interest until the last. She was a member of the Ankeny Congregational church, and was always deeply interested in all its work. She always spoke with pride of Mr. Howard's service in the Civil War, and her own loyalty to her country was of a discriminating and practical kind. She belonged to the Service Star Legion of Des Moines, and manifest great interest in the welfare of the disabled veterans of the World's War. Always a lover of children, Mrs. Howard and Georgia Donaghy, who has, made her home with her for some years, were the most affectionate companions, and with the young folks who visited in the home "Aunt Laura" was always a great favorite.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one sister, Miss Margaret Shugart, five nephews, four nieces, and a large company of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral services were held in the Ankeny Congregational church at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. Elliott, of Des Moines, officiating, and interment was made in Pine Hill cemetery.
