John Boyle served in World War 1 under the alias name
John Ballantine

Aged 22.
Son of Bridget Boyle (nee Ferron), of 24, Mary Street, North Dundalk, and the late James Boyle.


The SS Haverford was a transatlantic liner that was requisitioned as a troop transport ship at the start of World War 1. I was hit by a torpedo from German Submarine U-94, off the coast of Donegal, and suffered heavy damage.
Seven member of the crew are buried here in Cockhill.



In the 1911 census, the Boyle family were living at Casey's Place, Dundalk.

James Boyle, aged 64, a Mason's Labourer, married, Born in Co. Armagh.
Bridget, his wife, aged 38, married, born in Co. Louth.
They had been married 20 years and had 8 children, 6 of whom were alive.

Rose, daughter, aged 18, a Linen Weaver,
John, son, aged 16, a Labourer on Railway,
Kate, daughter, aged 14, a Winder in a Linen Mill,
Mary Anne, daughter, aged 10, a Scholar,
Alice, daughter, aged 5,
Ellen, daughter, aged 2,

Patrick, son, aged 42, was noted as "an imbecile"

All, apart from James, were born in Co. Louth.
