In the spring of 1939, he was commissioned to second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He fought in North Africa, later in Italy, where he flew a total of 92 combat missions, 70 of which he served as squadron commander. He earned seven campaign battle stars and received seven air medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After WWII, he served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice R. Kelly.
