A shower of hail fell from the sky Friday just as Sue Cawley, Case High School's music director, approached the podium to lead the choir in honor of their former classmate, Berit Beck.

And as soon as the pastor said the last words of his closing prayer, the hail, like the ceremony, abruptly ended.

Despite the weather, dozens of friends and relatives gathered in a courtyard outside Case's music room to remember Beck on Friday, the day that would have been her 19th birthday.

Beck, of Sturtevant, disappeared July 17 while driving from Racine to a computer seminar in Appleton. Nearly a month later, her body was found in a ditch about three miles northeast of Waupun.

On Friday, amid the hail, there were tears on some of the faces at the ceremony. But a crowd of mostly solemn faces looked on as a blossoming cherry tree was planted in front of the school in memory of Beck.

"A group of parents and students got together and we decided it would be a good idea to plant a tree because it will remind us of her, and it will be here forever," said Kristine Luxom, 17, a senior at Case High School and a friend of Beck's.

After the tree was planted, the Berit Beck Memorial Music Scholarship was announced in recognition of Beck's talent and accomplishment in music.

Beck's father, Dave, was pleased with what his daughter's peers and teachers were doing to honor her.

"The scholarship is probably the emphasis of what the tree stands for," David Beck said. "We're really happy to have the kids donating the money through their concerts and fund-raisers."

Collections for the scholarship began at Beck's funeral. A few months later, music students donated the proceeds from their annual Christmas concert to the fund, bringing the total to $600.
Since then, several other donations have been made.

The scholarship amount has not been set, but the school plans to make it an ongoing annual award for students who want to continue to study music after high school, Cawley said.

* The memorial scholarship benefit started in 2002 and is still going strong. In addition to the memorial tree planted in Berit's name at Case High School, a memorial tree was also planted by Berit's fellow 4-H club members at the Racine County Fairgrounds in Union Grove.
