TEENAGER KILLED BY FLEEING CAR
Milwaukee Journal June 25, 1974
A 17 year old honor student was fatally injured Monday night when she was struck by a stolen car being pursued by police on N. 76th street just north of Good Hope Road.
Eugenia Anderson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl K. Anderson, 8117 W. Beechwood Ave., died at 11:15 p.m. at County General Hospital of a neck fracture and numerous other injuries.
Police said the car driven by a 16 year old Milwaukee boy who had walked away from the Oregon school for Children.
He and a passenger, a 14 year old Brown Deer boy, were caught after the accident.
They were turned over to juvenile authorities.
It was learned that police were investigating the necessity for the chase.
Also, Frank Crisafl, an assistant district attorney, said he would seek a criminal court trial for the 16 year old boy.
He issued a delinquency petition charging the boy with homicide by reckless conduct, and several other charges.
The chase began when police in a squad car saw a car that they said had its lights out, behind a store in the 6200 block on N. 76th street.
Police said they did not know at the time that the car was stolen.
The car pulled onto 76th street, and its light went on. It sped north at speeds estimated at 70 to 90 miles an hour. Several squad cars pursued.
Just before the accident, police said, the fleeing car went out of control and fishtailed, skidding 273 feet on dry pavement.
Police said Eugenia was crossing 76th street in mid block from east to west with four friends.
She was struck in the northbound lane, about 15 feet east of the median.
The others were spread out and were not struck.
The car glanced off the east curb, rolled over, knocked down a speed limit sign and landed on top of a fire hydrant 85 feet from where Eugenia was hit.
The two boys in the car were only shaken up, but were taken to St. Michael Hospital and then released to authorities.
Eugenia was graduated June 13 from James Madison High School with a 3.425 average, 74th in a class of 950.
She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Latin Club and the school orchestra. She played three musical instruments.
