James David Herod was born on February 15, 1850 to Joseph H. Herod (1834-1874) and Amanda Walling (1836-1897).

He was married to Martha Mattie Lively. They were married on December 12, 1879.

They were blessed with eleven children: Robert F. Herod, Joseph Thomas Herod, Ada May Herod Smith, Jettie Anna Herod Masters, Anna Ola Herod, Lydia Marie Herod Bynum, Una Colombus Herod Montgomery, Horace Leonard Herod, Otis Elmo Herod, James Oren Herod, and Mattie Velera "Velma" Herod Smith.

He died on October 1, 1942 in Grapeland, Houston County, Texas. He was 84 years old.
