Douglas Wayne Ballard, of Big Spring, Texas, drowned at about 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 1968, in Lake J. B. Thomas, about 35 miles from the city of Gail in Borden County, Texas. He was 12 years old.
Justice of the Peace Roy Haynes ruled death by accidental drowning. Slick Sneed, Borden County sheriff, said that Douglas and his older brother Danny were swimming in the lake in front of the Ballard family cabin and apparently became exhausted. Two lake patrolman were summoned and rescued Danny and recovered Douglas' body.
Doug was born on Monday, Novemeber 28, 1955 in Limestone, Maine, to Doris Gay "Shorty" Ballard and Florence "Geneva" McGaugh. He was the brother of Perry Gilbert Ballard, Danny Lee Ballard and Linda Diane Ballard.
His maternal grandparents were Harley P. McGaugh and Annie "Florence" Deel, and his paternal grandfather was O. G. Ballard.
His maternal great grandparents were James Emmet "Jim" Deel and Maudie Viola Sargent Deel.
Doug was my second cousin. I sometimes wonder what he would have become in life. "Of all sad words of tongue and pen the saddest are these, it might have been."
