On January 1, 1960, he was shot to death as he began to take communion to home-bound parishioners.
Since that time, he has continued to be remembered by the people of the west side of Buffalo, including having a Community Center named for him.

Fr. Belle was graduate of Public School 83, Kensington High School, Canisius College, and Christ the King Seminary. He also attended Bennett High School before transferring to Kensington. Ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1947. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Dominic Belle.
He was starting his car in the parish garage when he was shot dead. Initially it was thought he had died of a heart attack. At the funeral home three bullet wounds were found in his back. His mnurderer was apprehended within a few days.
