*********

Florence Boyd was one of the victims of the worst tornado to hit a town the size of Udall, Kansas (population 610) in U.S. history. The tornado hit the town at 10:29 pm on May 25, 1955, killing 77 people and injuring 270. Almost all property, houses and automobiles in the town were damaged or destroyed. From the time the storm crossed U.S. Highway 166, the tornado path was nearly continuous and stretched for over 50 miles. This same storm produced an earlier tornado that struck Blackwell, Oklahoma, killing 20 and injuring 250.

The Wichita, Kansas, Forecast Office of the National Weather Service has a memorial web page that describes the events of May 25, 1955 and a storm report page that describes the tornadic storm chronology. The 50th anniversary of the event was on May 25, 2005.
