April 7, 2010 — Joseph Luke Arwood, a fourth-year University of Virginia student, died unexpectedly on April 4 in Charlottesville. He was 21.

Arwood was an expected 2010 graduate of U.Va., with majors in psychology, Russian language and literature and Arabic language and culture. He had planned to earn a Ph.D. in cognitive science and apply it to understanding how the human brain processes music. His research will soon be published by U.Va.

Arwood, a member of Sigma Phi Society, had been house manager for the past year. He also volunteered at the HELP Line, the University's student-run anonymous telephone service for those looking for someone to speak to about any emotional turmoil or problems.

A 2006 valedictorian and graduate of Rye Cove High School in Duffield, Va., Arwood was the son of Mike and Kim Lee Dorton, Duffield, and Sam and Carolyn Arwood, Corpus Christi, Texas. He is also survived by his brothers, Jacob Arwood and Chris "Kayla" Dorton, his grandparents, his great-grandfather, his aunt and uncles, many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harry Otis Arwood, and his sister, April Dorton.

Family will receive visitors at Thomas Village Baptist Church in Duffield on April 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. and anytime at the residence. The funeral will be on April 8 at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be on April 9 at 11 a.m. at the Fraley Cemetery.

A memorial service at U.Va. will be planned for a later date.

The University of Virginia community is grieving the loss of one of its students.

Joe Arwood, a fourth-year psychology student and member of Sigma Phi fraternity (commonly referred to as SERP), died shortly before noon Sunday. Arwood was found unconscious Friday morning and was being treated at the UVa Medical Center.

Fraternity brothers canceled social events for this upcoming weekend, and other fraternities on grounds are following suit.

SERP fraternity members said they are grieving and upset, which is the reason for canceling a party for the Mahogony Dance Troupe, a hip-hop dance group, scheduled for Saturday.

A spokesperson for the medical examiner in Richmond said the office has not determined a cause of death for Arwood and said it could take up to six months for those test results to come in.
