835311 Sergeant Patrick McMahon.
The Royal Artillery.
aged 26.
Son of Denis McMahon and Mary O'Sullivan McMahon, of Clonbeg.
Denis and Mary were married in The Church of St. John, Tralee on 1st February 1910. Mary is on the right of the second photo.
Denis died in 1948, and Mary died in 1962.
Patrick joined the British Army, and in 1937 was a member of 28th Field Battery of the Royal Artillery, based at Bulford Barracks, Salisbury, Wiltshire.
He was part of the British Expeditionary Force that was sent to Belgium and France in 1939, although hostilities did not commence until the invasion of France on 10 May 1940. He was one of those evacuated from Dunkirk in May-June 1940, and sent home.
It is believed that he received shrapnel wounds to his head during the attack on Dunkirk, which were inoperable and eventually contributed to his death.
There is some confusion as to his exact date of death.
The CWGC notes his date of death as 30 September, but a Kerry burial register gives a date of death as 27 September, and a burial date of 29 September.
