J. C. Forkner - a land developer. His greatest and most memorable work is in the Fig Garden area, which consisted of 12,000 acres. Mr. Forkner surfaced 120 miles of road and planted 600,000 fig trees and 60,000 ornamental trees.

Today this is still the most beautiful area in Fresno. Unfortunately there are only a few fig trees left. Christmas Tree Lane and the Van Ness extension, with all of the beautiful homes, are all a part of this Forkner acreage.

Jesse Clayton Forkner was born in Lola, Cherokee County, Kansas to Jesse Forkner (Birthplace: Kentucky) and Martha C. "Mattie" Tolbert Forkner (Birthplace: Indiana or Ohio). Martha died 06 April 1913 in Fresno, CA.

In 1897, Jesse married Grace Hood, and from this union a son, John Hood Forkner was born in 1910, the same year in which Grace died in Los Angeles on 15 January 1910. The 1910 Census shows Jesse (a widower) and his three month old son living in the home of Lulu Fisher and her children in Fresno, CA.

On 03 Apr 1912, at the age of 38, Jesse married 22yr old Lewella (A. or P.) Swift (b: Michigan) in Fresno, CA.

Children from this union (born in CA):
Mary J. (married Adolph E. Brez, b: Illinois);
James Swift (b: 19 Mar 1916, Fresno, CA; d: Feb 1977);
Robert L. (married Muriel E., b: New York);
William Thayer (b: 18 December 1921, Fresno, CA; d: 19 October 1930).
