Modern headstone has John Emery Sr

Son of JOHN EMERY Jr 1572 – 1627 and AGNES NORTHEND 1575 – 1610 of Romsey, Hampshire, England (note, during his lifetime, this John was known as John Emery Sr but he is really the Third John Emery). This John Emery was the 2nd of 3 in a row to have the name John Emery. His grandfather was John EMERI/EMERYS [see memorial #147133658], from France. The name was changed to EMERY when John Emery and his wife Alle Banet and children escaped from France in 1572 and went to Romsey, Hampshire, England.

NOTE: it has been SUGGESTED, but not DOCUMENTED that his grandfather was Richard Emery. Please submit documentation for this assertion that he was John Emery Jr not John Emery III and I will be happy to change, subject to rejection of the above documentation.

He married MARY ALICE GRANTHAM 1599 – 1646 in about 1620 in England; parents of:

Alice EMERY 1620 – 1680 [m. J. Chater]
Eleanor EMERY 1624 – 1700 [m. J. Bailey]
Jonathan "John" (Sgt.) EMERY IV 1629 – 1709
ANNE EMERY 1631 – 1687 [m. James Ordway]

(2) and Mary Shatswell Webster Emery parents of:

Ebenezer (a girl) 1648-1694
Jonathan 1652-1723.

He arrived with brother Anthony, per The English Origins of New England Families, in about 1635; on the "James" of London, with Wm Cooper (Master), 300 tons. Sailed Apr 5 and arrived June 3, 1635. Per the "Great Migration" series of books, Volume II C-F, John Emery has only four known children with Alice: Alice (m. John Chater by 1644); Eleanor (m. John Bailey by 1661); John (m. Mary by 1650); Anne (m. James Ordway 25 Nov 1648).

He married Mary [Shatswell] Webster October 29, 1650 in Ipswich, Essex, MA and removed with her to Haverhill, MA. He and his son. John Emery, were appointed guardians of Israel Webster, aged eighteen ; and Nathan Webster, aged sixteen, at their request November 26, 1662. The family removed to Newbury, MA from Ipswich, MA. Administration was granted to John Webster's widow Mary, November 4, 1646, and later at her desire division was made to the eight minor children : to the eldest son John the farm, he paying to the youngest son five pounds or quarter of the value of the farm; Mary, Stephen and Hannah to have equal shares in the island .bought of Widow Andrews; Elizabeth, Abigail and Israel to have twenty nobles apiece ; all at twenty-one years of age.

NOTE: now (2022) First Burying Ground Cemetery has been merged with Burying Ground of the First Settlers.

There is a Cenotaph of John located at: Find A Grave Memorial #6880623, which is located in the First Burying Ground, Newbury, Massachusetts, USA. There are quite a few markers there that are Cenotaphs of actual burials that are in this First Parish Burying Ground, Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA.

There is an article from April 8, 1880 published in the Newburyport Herald written by Issac W. Little that states John and others are buried in this First Parish Burying Ground, Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA .
