He was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Broadway composer and entertainer George M. Cohan in 1942's "Yankee Doodle Dandy." He was successful in the early days of his career as a star at Warner Bros. Pictures with memorable portrayals of "tough guys" in now-iconic films include: "The Public Enemy" (1931), "Angels with Dirty Faces" (1938), and "White Heat" (1949). His line "Made it Ma! Top of the World!" from "White Heat" was named the 19th greatest all-time movie quote by the American Film Institute. In addition to his 1942 Oscar win, he was nominated twice for Best Actor for his work in "Angels with Dirty Faces" and 1955's "Love Me or Leave Me."
