Mary Josephine Ray, 114, died Sunday March 7, 2010, at Maplewood County Nursing Home in Westmoreland, NH.
Mary was the oldest person living in the United States, the second oldest person in the world, and recorded as the oldest person ever to live in New Hampshire. As of Feb. 15, 2010, she was listed as one of 30 longest lived people ever.
Mary was born May 17, 1895, in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada, to Robert Fabian and Lydee Ann (Blanchard) Arsenault. She was the oldest person ever recorded born in Prince Edward Island and the third-oldest person ever born in Canada.
Mary moved to the United States at the age of 3. As a teenager, after the death of both of her parents, she went out on her own working as a housekeeper and store clerk. In 1923 she was married to Walter H. Ray.
She was a 60-year resident of Anson, Maine. At age 72, following the death of her husband, she moved to Florida. At age 80, she moved to Chelmsford, Mass., and later moved to Hinsdale. At age 102 she became a resident of the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland.
Mary was an avid Red Sox fan and collected Red Sox merchandise. Her 108th birthday cake had a Red Sox symbol on it.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter H. Ray, in 1967.
She is survived by two sons, Robert B. Ray and his wife Barbara of Pensacola, Fla., and Donald K. Ray and his wife Barbara of Westmoreland; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren.
Interment will be in the spring in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison. (Morning Sentinel 3/8/2010)
