Georgia Ella Jones
'MaMaw'
Mrs. Jones, 103, of Matthews passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Carrington Place. Mrs. Jones was born on October 13, 1907 in Corapeake, NC to the late Martin and Ophelia Mathias. She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clarence Jones; son, Joseph Martin Jones and daughter, Jacqueline Anne Justice [and grandson Clel Ashley Jones].
She married Clarence and moved to Norfolk, VA where she raised her family. She worked hard all her life, whether working at her job of many years as a baker, or in her home. She was always there for family and friends and all who knew her loved her.
In recent years she lived with and was cared for by her granddaughter, Susan Harrison-Gates and family in Matthews. She was a loyal member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church and was a very religious person with a strong belief in the power of prayer. She attributed her longevity and generally good health to her belief in God and Jesus Christ, her prayers, and the prayers of her friends and family. Her favorite heartfelt saying was, 'I'll say a prayer for you.'
Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Glenn Jones of Memphis, TN; daughter, Marcia Campbell of Indian Trail [Marcia is the former Mrs. Howard Douglas Campbell. Doug was the son of Howard & Barbara Campbell.]; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank all the people at Carrington Place and Presbyterian Hospice for the excellent care and support they provided for MaMaw and the family.
Visitation will begin at 1PM at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church on Thursday, March 10, followed by a funeral service to celebrate her life at 3PM; a reception will follow. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St. in Norfolk, VA at 2PM Friday, March 11, 2011.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Georgia Ella Jones Memorial Fund c/o Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, Attn: Pastor Thomas, 8600 Potter Road, Weddington, NC 28104. Heritage Funeral Home in Indian Trail is in charge of final arrangements.
