A memorial service for Horace G. Dyer, 94, of Martinsville, who died Jan. 22, 2011, at King's Grant Retirement Community where he lived, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at King's Grant Victory Chapel. The Rev. Paul Johnson will officiate.
Dyer was born in Martinsville in 1916 to Hugh Nelson Dyer and Katherine Garrett Dyer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Vaughn Dyer; a son, David Frederick "Freddy" Dyer; a brother, Hugh Nelson Dyer; and a sister, Katherine Dyer Dudley.
He attended public schools in Martinsville and graduated from Martinsville High School and the College of William and Mary.
He worked at First National Bank in Martinsville before being drafted into the Navy during World War II. Dyer served as a gunnery officer aboard the battleship USS Pennsylvania in the Pacific Theater.
He was formerly active in the Martinsville Lions Club, where he was a past president and zone chairman of the District 24-A Lions International.
He was a member and past president of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Co.; secretary and past chairman of the Martinsville Board of Zoning Appeals; past president of the George Waller Chapter of S.A.R.; was one of the organizers of Virginia Furniture Co. Inc. and served as treasurer of the company; and was a member of the board of directors of Stanley Furniture Co. until it merged with The Mead Corp.
Dyer had been a member of the advisory board of Virginia National Bank and a member and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ferrum College.
A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, he had served as board chairman, trustee and a Sunday school teacher.
At the time of his death, he was a member of the Knights of Pythias; Sons of the American Revolution, where he had served as president; The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia; The Order of the White Jacket at the College of William and Mary; and was Trustee Emeritus of Ferrum College.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne N. Dyer of King's Grant in Martinsville; one son, Thomas Gray Dyer Sr. of Rural Hall, N.C.; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
