As a Quaker, on 14 Mar 1683, Thomas was granted a certificate to leave for America. He left England onboard the ship "Bristol Comfort", arriving in Philadelphia by way of the Delaware River, the 28th day of the 7th month 1683 [28 Jul 1683, New Style date]. He was received in Philadelphia and later moved to Chester.

Pennsylvania History of Chester Co, Pg 77:
Chester MM, Delaware Co PA:
"...Thomas, whose relationship to them is unknown, produced his certificate (from Philadelphia to Chester) at the same time."

The above record refers to Thomas' relationship to John and Ann Bowater, who were also received into the Chester MM.

To pay his passage, Thomas indentured himself to Francis Fincher. According to the ship's manifest:
"Tho. Bowater out of Worcestershire, servant to francis fincher out of Woster City, glover, for three years."

After serving his indenture, he took up residence in Edgemont Twp in Chester Co PA, purchasing 69 acres.

Penna. Archives, Second Series, Vol. XIX, p 387:
"THOMAS BOWATER purchased 69 acres"

On 4 Aug 1686 [New Style date] at the Chester MM in Delaware Co PA, Thomas and Sarah Edge, declaring for the second time their intentions to marry, were granted this liberty.

Att a Monthly meeting att Chester ye 4th of ye 8th mo 1686....
Thomas Bowater and Sarah Edg proposed their intentions of marriage being the second time: and Inquire being made and thing found Clear on boath sids they are left to their liberty to Accomplish their marriage according to Truths Order."

1) Sarah C Bowater (1688-1765), m: John Jacob Beals Jr. (my 6th gr-grandparents)
2) Thomas Bowater Jr (b. 1690)

On 29 May 1702 Thomas married second to Frances (Lambe) Barnard, widow of Richard Barnard. They were married at the Concord Meeting House.

"At A Monthly Meeting held at New garden ye 8th of ye 7th mo: 1722...
The Meeting being Called ye representatives all appeared.
The friends appointed to make inquiry concerning Thomas Bowater have given this Meeting an acct: that his conversation was orderly therefore we have granted him a Certificate to haverford Monthly Meeting."

Dear friends and Brethren after ye Salutation of our dear love in our Lord Jesus Christ to you: these are to let you understand that the Bearer hereof Thomas Boweter and also his wife having for some time been members of this meeting; but being now removed within the Limitts of your meeting, Declare our Certificate, Therefore therefore [sic] to let you understand yt after due inquiry made we find nothing but that they have behaved themselves orderly as becomes the Truth; and were in unity whilest with us. So desiring they may be kept & preserved Stedfast ~ ~ ~ to the end of their dayes, we remain your Dear friends & Brethren ~

Thomas died after 8 Jul 1722, but before his wife died in June 1724.

Thomas died after 8 Jul 1722, but before his wife died in June 1724.

Gravesite Details

At age 66 years, both Thomas and second wife Frances, removed to Haverford MM. It is likely they were also buried there as there are no further records indicating they transferred to another monthly meeting. Confirmation to be posted.
