"When a police officer is killed, it's not an agency that loses an officer, it's an entire nation." -Chris Cosgriff, ODMP Founder

Officer Jason Crisp
United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations, U.S. Government
End of Watch: Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Jason M. Crisp, loving and devoted husband, father, son and friend to many, lost his life in the line of duty along with his partner, K-9 Officer Maros, on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. Jason was an Officer with the U. S. Forest Service. He began his career on the Grandfather Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest, and was a former Sheriff's Deputy with the McDowell County Sheriff's Department. A more honest and dedicated officer would be hard to find and Jason exemplified the motto "To Protect and Serve" not only in his work life but in his personal life as well.

"Jason took great pride in his work on the Grandfather," said Southern Regional Forester Liz Agpaoa. "He was a very kind and understanding man who could light up a room with his sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him and had the fortune to work with him."

A graduate of McDowell High School, Jason worked at Columbia Carolina while in school and for a period of time following school before finding his true calling in law enforcement. After an eight year stint with the Sheriff's Department which began in 1997, he transferred to the U. S. Forest Service in 2004. He graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in 2005.

Jason loved his Lord and his church family and was a faithful member of West Court Baptist Church. He enjoyed being outside, working with his dog or fishing. Jason was loved by many and all who knew him will miss him dearly.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 18 years, Amanda Dicks Crisp; two sons, Garett and Logan Crisp, of the home; his father, James Paul Crisp of Marion; his mother, Sharon Elaine DiGirolamo Tangeman of Duncan, SC; his sister, Shari Crisp of Morganton; three brothers, Bryon Crisp and his wife Elisabeth of Marion, Eric Crisp and his wife Julie of Marion and Tim Rudisill and his wife Bethany of Greensboro; a niece, Eleni Zenteno and three nephews, Payton, Matthew and Bryson Crisp.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the McDowell High School Gymnasium with Rev. Ross Lewis and Rev. Charles Dicks officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at West Court Baptist Church.

K-9 Officer Maros will be buried with Officer Crisp and thus will remain the sword and faithful companion at his right side eternally.

"For a time we were unbeatable,
Nothing passed among us
undetected."

The burial service will be private.

Memorials, to benefit their children, may be made to Amanda Crisp at the State Employees Credit Union, PO Box 8, Marion, NC 28752.

WASHINGTON – The entire North Carolina House delegation introduced legislation on Tuesday to designate the ranger station within the Grandfather Ranger District in Nebo as the Jason Crisp Forest Service Building.

The following is a statement released by the family of fallen U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer Jason Crisp and his K-9 Maros:

"Jason was a loving father, loving husband and a great friend. He was his wife's best friend and the love of her life. He loved the Lord and was an honest Christian man who gave his life protecting his friends. He loved doing his job with a passion. The only thing he loved more than his job was his family and friends. He died a hero. However, he was a hero well before. Maros was also our family member and he was loved like a child. Jason loved working with Maros. Thank you to all of the agencies for your hard work and thank you for all of the prayers, calls and visits from our family and friends."

United States Forestry Officer Jason Crisp, a 10 year veteran, and his partner K-9 Officer Maros, were shot and killed today in Burke County, North Carolina, while participating in the manhunt for a subject who had murdered his parents.

Officers from several agencies were searching for the subject after the bodies of his parents were located in their home in the 5000 block of Fish Hatchery Road. The man had previously served one year in prison on a manslaughter charge for a murder he committed in 1997.

Officer Crisp and several other officers were fired upon after they located the subject in the area of Fish Hatchery Road and Pea Ridge Road. Officer Crisp was fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire.

Officer Crisp's aunt said he wasn't supposed to be at work, but he answered a call for help, saying "He was called in because there was a gate that needed to be unlocked and he evidently had the key."

The subject then stole Officer Crisp's service weapon and extra magazines before fleeing further into the woods. He was located by other officers a short time later and was shot and killed when he opened fire on them.

On behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture, I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We keep Jason in our thoughts and prayers and pledge to honor all of those who protect and serve. Officer Crisp, who was killed alongside his partner K-9 Officer Maros, upheld the finest traditions of the Forest Service."
