Fallen Peace officer. He was the Sheriff of Delta County, Colorado, who was shot and killed at a logging camp near Leadville in Lake County, Colorado, while attempting to arrest a Delta County suspect on three outstanding warrants. The suspect, whom Sheriff Davis had known since the suspect was a boy, asked if he could get his sweater and used this ploy to draw a .45 calibre handgun. The suspect opened fire, striking Davis in the side. As the suspect turned to flee, Davis managed to pull his own gun and fired once, missing the suspect but causing him to stop and immediately surrender. Davis died of his wound two days later. The suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 10 to 20 years in state prison. He was paroled after serving less than 5 years. Sheriff Davis left behind his wife and seven children.
