Perry Chuculate, Nephew of Cherokee Chieftain, Made His Name Almost Mythical

Perry Chuculate, 32-year-old deputy sheriff who died Friday afternoon in St. John's hospital from bullet wounds received that morning in an attempt to halt two bandits believed to have robbed tow banks at Covington, was a member of one Sequoyah county's historic Cherokee families and one of the picturesque figures of the county's law force.
Chuculate, who was three-fourths Cherokee, was the son of Elmira Faulkner, sister of old "Uncle Dave" Faulkner, Hanson, Okla., chieftain of the Cherokee tribe and the founder of a pioneer eastern Oklahoma family. Chuculate's father, George, was a full-blood Cherokee.
The Old Chuculate homestead, at which George was reared, stands one and one-half mile this side of Sallisaw. On it the cabin built by the Cherokee family in the early Indian Territory days still remains. The farm is now owned by C.B. Johnson, m909 South Twenty-Sixth Street, who resigned as mayor of Sallisaw a year ago.
Noted for Fearlessness
"Perry's part in this affair,' said Johnson Saturday, referring to the attempt made by four Sequoyah county officers to halt the bandits west of Sallisaw, "was typical of his history in the police and sheriff's force.
"He was fearless. He was a crack shot with a pistol or gun. He always rushed in at the most dangerous times, forgetting caution. It was no surprise to any of his friends when we heard he had been shot, for he always was in the thick of any shooting, and it is miraculous he escaped with his life up to that time."
Chuculate began work on the night police force of Sallisaw when he was 23 years old, according to Johnson, now mayor was then chief of police. When Johnson went out of office last June, he said Chuculate resigned and became associated with John E. Johnston, sheriff, as deputy. At the time of his death he was chief field deputy sheriff.
Killed Three While Policeman
When Chuculate was night police officer, he killed three men. One was an ex-soldier, Ross Taylor, believed to have been mentally unbalanced. Chuculate had been called to Taylor's home to protect the insane man's wife, whom he was beating while intoxicated. Another victim of the deputy's was Tom Benson, whom he killed in front of the Wonderland theatre, Sallisaw, when Benson started shooting at E. B. Bugher, theatre owner. Benson also was said to have been drinking.
Chuculate also shot and killed a man who attacked him after the deputy had pursued him form the front to the rear of the Palace Drug store in Sallisaw.
Captured Noted Bandits
The Cherokee officer has numbers of exploits to his credit, so that his name, although he was a young man, had become a sort of myth in eastern Oklahoma, Johnson said.
Chuculate was leading the posse, gathered from Oklahoma towns, last spring when Frank Chance was captured in Coke Hill. Bert Cotton, under sheriff, and brother-in-law of Chuculate, was given credit for firing the shot that killed Chance.
One of the most famous captures before he went bad." He said, was out of Sallisaw on a highway after attempting to rob a bank, when he ran out of gas. He entered the town, happing to choose the garage of Bert Cotton to rob. Chuculate was at the time and walked in the garage and captured Ed and a Companion. He then went with them to the edge of the town, to their waiting motor car, and captured Lockhart's brother."
Received Two Rewards
Chuculate received $1,000 reward from the Arkansas Banker's association for that feat. He and J. C. Woll, chief of police of Sallisaw, who Friday was kidnapped by the bandits who fatally wounded Chuculate, received $1,000 reward last winter for capturing two St. Louis bandits.
