Early in their marriage Charles ran a trading post on an Indian Reservation in Iowa. He had to kill an Indian in self defense and couldn't get over it and left the trading post. In 1917 Carl Odem and he bought the DeBeque Hardware Store in Colorado.He was the first elected mayor of Cedaredge, Colorado, following its incorporation March 29, 1907. He also served the town as police magistrate. On July 13, 1914, Delta County Sheriff Cash Sampson presented his resignation to the county commissioners and Charles Blanchard was appointed to the sheriff's position effective August 1. He served out Sampson's unexpired term and ran for sheriff in the next election, but lost to Mack Davis. A reservoir on Grand Mesa is named for him.
