Alcatraz Guard. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War One, Harold Stites would become a correctional officer working at the notorious Alcatraz Prison. In 1938, Stites was posted at a watchtower when three inmates murdered Officer Royal Cline during an escape attempt. The inmates attempted to take over the tower, forcing Stites to fire at them, killing one and wounding another. On May 2nd, 1946, six inmates, Marvin Hubbard, Bernard Coy, Joseph Paul Cretzer, Myron Thompson, Sam Shockley, and Clarence Carnes, made an attempt to escape. By the time the alarm was sounded, the inmates had captured part of the prison and locked up most of the on duty guards. Officer Stites was among the first guards to make an attempt at taking back the prison. However, during the battle, he was shot in he back and killed. He would become the first casualty of the "Battle for Alcatraz." By the time the battle was over on May 4th, three inmates - Hubbard, Coy, and Cretzer - were killed, as well as two guards, Officer Stites and Officer William Miller.
