Benny L. Curtis, 73, of Iuka, Miss., died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at his residence.

He was a son of Zilpha Mae Walters Curtis (1913-2007) of Iuka and the late C.R. [Charles Rufus] Curtis (1911-1976). He was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Myrtle Nunley Curtis who died April 18, 2005.

Mr. Curtis was a lifelong educator and finished his career by retiring from the State Department of Education in 1986, where he served for many years as the executive director of the State Advisory Council on Vocational Education. He earned his bachelor of science and master's in education from Mississippi State University. He also did post graduate work toward his PhD at MSU.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Ron Curtis of Charlotte; one daughter, Melinda Rees of Rutherfordton; two sisters, Delma Lovelace of Iuka, and Bonnie Sparks of Dennis, Miss.; five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka. Bro. Frank Wilson and Bro. Bob Moritz will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Iuka.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 409410, Living Legacy Partnership, Atlanta, Ga. 30384-9410.
