Born and raised in Athens, Clarke County, Ga., Bernice was the oldest son of Alvin L. Brooks and Bessie Benton Brooks. He was the husband of Nora Belle (Bill) Davis Brooks and had one brother A.L. Brooks.
In the later part of 1942 he volunteered to serve his country in the United States Navy Seabee's. After being discharged he co-owned and operated B&Z Garage, an automotive repair shop in Athens, Ga.
Bernice was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church where he served as deacon for several years. He was well liked and respected by everyone that knew him.
